Earth Timeline Walkway

This project was inspired by a trip to Disney World, where I became aware of all the really cool things you can do with concrete. I was particularly excited about the walkways in the Animal Kingdom park that had fossil-type impressions of leaves, animal footprints, and other objects in them—a great example of how Disney delivers delightful little surprises where you least expect them.

The concrete walkway and circular area are designed to be a timeline that represents all of earth's 4.6 billion years of existence. The engraved line on the main part of the walkway has a scale of 1 million years = 1 mm. The spiral represents the last 600 million years of the earth's history and has a scale of 1 million years = 13.7 mm. The small circular mosaics mark important milestones—the formation of the earth and moon, the first cells, the appearance of reptiles, dragonflies, apes, and so on.

This project has involved a lot of trial and error with the mosaics and the plantings and is still in progress.
